What is coffee to an architect? A simple cup in the morning: the smell signaling a productive day ahead, the taste energizing. Yet, ironically, it is equally an architect’s opportunity for repose.

The office environment promotes a high functioning environment, one that is grounded in the team’s well being. Productivity is not opposed by relaxation, rather, they maintain a crucial equilibrium in work life. 

Despite the bustle of the office, we always make time to reset. Each day, after lunch, the office gathers to go for a brief walk to grab coffee at a local shop near the office together. Coffee time allows us to center ourselves and connect with each other. Whether it’s a small conversation unrelated to the latest project, or connecting with the summer interns, coffee time welds the office environment together. Rotating around local Dumbo shops as each team member champions their favorite, we explore our surroundings just as we learn more about each other. As with many CAZA traditions, coffee time focuses on embracing our studio as not just a workspace, but as a community.

By taking a moment each day to pause, reboot, and connect, we prepare ourselves for each new project. A brief reprise from meticulous design improves our attentiveness and productivity for the remainder of the work day. Even more so, coffee time gives the opportunity to take a step back from a project and approach it with a new perspective afterwards, a critical skill to utilize throughout the process to match both site, client, and technical demands. A remedy to the debilitating brain fog that clouds creativity, coffee time is a crucial intermission to maintain the tempo of our work process. Coffee time may appear as a small moment in the CAZA office atmosphere, but it is a critical reset during the day and an extension of our collaborative ethos.

Models, diagrams, sketches, renders – every architect has their own preferred expression of architecture. At CAZA, we don’t judge nor restrict, we embrace all methods. In order to best adapt, iterate, and visualize our projects, CAZA facilitates an open, un-restricted design process. Our space is constantly filled with new visualizations of projects: studies on form, materiality, language, and relationship, all open to discussion.

This interactive design process is supported by constant feedback. An active creative laboratory, we map all our projects within our office space and bridge ideas with constant, team-wide meetings. Outside approaches and aerial perspectives on projects prevent narrow solutions and encourage us to remain open and conscious as we design.

CAZA recognizes the necessity of feedback to the design process by keeping meetings open and feedback free. As a result, each member of the team gets to learn from and have the opportunity to contribute to each project. This open workshop not only enhances individual projects by going through rounds of internal, team-wide feedback, but also benefits our design team, as with each project and thereby each constructive input, we grow.

Since their inception, libraries have been a foundation for all disciplines of thought, the physical bricks of institutional and cultural knowledge. Architecture cannot be disentangled from philosophy and scholarship, the molding of the built environment is inherently conceptually laden. As expressed in “Architecture as an Art of Understanding,” societal desires require architectural solutions – a response to inquiry (Mizia 2014, 81-83). CAZA’s design process is therefore centered around our creative bank, our library, as a philosophical guide. Our many iterations of architectural designs and urban plans are informed by references. Pulling from our reservoir of images, we base each project in a foundation of intention. With every additional project, our library of references grows, our ever-expanding nexus of creativity.

At CAZA, ingenuity is encouraged, each project an opportunity. Not only do we draw from our library, but we peer beyond the traditional boundaries of design. We do not restrict ourselves to rigid boxes that stifle organic thinking. Much like our parametric geometries, we extrapolate singular thoughts into webs of ideas. Innovation is informed by constant sources of inspiration, so we remain proactive in seeking them out. Both digitally and physically, the office is encased by books on architectural theory and publication pages of recent installations. The office hums of sifting through pages of our catalog and equally from investigating avenues decorated by novel ideas. 

This inspiration not only propels our projects, but also our public-facing work. Drawing from CAZA’s expansive library, published books emerged, such as The Metabolism of Settlement Coexistences and CAZA: 2011 – 2015. Our creative records similarly inspire our series of White Papers, researched-based commentaries on architecture. Upcoming works rooted in our reservoir are papers on the integration of data centers and urban design as well as stormwater runoff. The former is motivated by grappling with the nuances of technological integration into the built environment and the latter from our coastal projects that are rooted in ecological consciousness. Thus, we continuously assemble a foundation of references that inspires each project.
