Manila is a coastal metropolis of 13 million people that has turned its back on the water. The Event Tent attempts to redress the absence of an active and accessible urban waterfront. The structure works with tessellated triangular forms making both a field and an enclosure. We designed a hexagonal roof unit out of folded steel plates, with one asymmetrical column that can be arranged into a necklace with many centers of activity. The Event Tent rises on the horizon with a series of upturned half pyramids resembling a regatta of Philippine sailboats known as paraws. The project represents the idea that contemporary culture is looking not for singular monuments but for a swarm of incalculable images.
