FEU Pavilion
How can a nature-driven multi-faith pavilion serve as a unifying anchor for a vibrant campus community?
Surrounded by the lush tree canopy at the heart of the vibrant Far Eastern University Diliman campus, the FEU Bamboo Multi-Faith Space stands as a sanctuary of stillness and reflection. Rooted in both community and culture, this open-air sacred space reimagines solemn geometry by celebrating traditional Filipino materials, specifically bamboo and bagol (coconut husks). Rather than imposing heavy, rigid forms upon the landscape, the structure utilizes these organic elements to create a serene environment that nurtures deep contemplation and interpersonal connection.
The architectural brilliance of the pavilion is fully realized through CAZA’s sophisticated computer-aided design, which seamlessly joins sweeping, petal-shaped roofs with elegant, curving clerestory windows. This spatial arrangement allows natural light, the surrounding landscape, and the spirit of learning to intricately intertwine. Framed by gentle breezes that flow freely through the open elevations, the building appears to soar with the lightness and dexterity of a forest, offering students and visitors a vital moment of calm within the dynamic rhythm of campus life.
Earning the distinction of being the world’s first engineered bamboo building, the pavilion elevates a humble, indigenous material into a monumental structural achievement. By reimagining the spatial power of engineered wood, the sanctuary perfectly balances the elemental warmth of its natural components with cutting-edge architectural vision. This synthesis of tradition and modernity results in a light-filled sanctuary that transcends standard institutional architecture, redefining what it means to build a sacred, biophilic space in the twenty-first century.

High-Tech Precision and Modular Bamboo Fabrication
To achieve the sanctuary's complex, undulating forms, the project relies heavily on the structural integrity of engineered bamboo produced by Rizome. Moving far beyond traditional applications, Rizome manufactures advanced modular parts and engineered lumber right in the Philippines that are engineered to be as strong as steel and as tough as concrete, all while retaining the natural beauty of hardwood. By utilizing their high-tech precision manufacturing systems, the intricately designed bamboo and bagol components can be fabricated to exact global standards and assembled with meticulous accuracy, allowing the pavilion's ambitious geometric architecture to become a tangible reality.

Sustainable Architecture Through Regenerative Production
The integration of Rizome's engineered bamboo extends the pavilion’s architectural narrative deeply into the realm of ecological responsibility. Bamboo is an incredibly efficient renewable resource; its rapid growth allows it to sequester massive amounts of carbon, reverse deforestation, and bind the earth to prevent soil erosion. By sourcing these modular, sustainable structural elements, the FEU Multi-Faith Space not only champions innovative biophilic design but also actively fosters a climate-positive supply chain. The resulting architecture is a profound testament to how modern construction can harmonize with the environment, creating a sacred space that honors the regenerative power of nature.
