In 2014, the SM Megamall finalized its construction in Manila, Philippines, making it the largest mall in Asia and the second largest mall in the world. For this massive commercial project, CAZA designed the facility’s main public amenities, including an Olympic-sized indoor skating rink. This massive venue combines brightly-colored accents with sophisticated geometries to compose an open, inviting space for users to enjoy icy recreation in an iceless city. A complex textured light fixture extending across entire rink’s ceiling provides a visually impactful centerpiece for users to indulge in as they float throughout the space. While malls are often situated in sealed off, impersonal environments, CAZA’s design for the amenities at the SM Megamall aimed to weave together commerce, movement, and entertainment in hopes of creating a constellation of community-oriented spaces that cultivate an environment where leisure time is constructed and enjoyed.
