Seaside City
Can a mall amplify a culture's indigenous traditions?
Cebu, Philippines
Completed 2016
For Seaside City, one of the largest malls in the world, CAZA designed a suite of social spaces including a 465-seat food hall and an 18-lane bowling alley using design techniques indigenous to Cebu. The food hall’s main seating areas are covered with networks of colorful PVC threads, which are organized into circular forms and honor the region’s legacy of basket weaving and knitted rattan furniture in Cebu. In the bowling alley, these PVC threads are used to define social spaces like table-top game zones and snack bars, creating a mix of experiences.
